Cervical mucus: definition and meaning

2 min read 路 Updated October 27, 2026

Definition

Cervical mucus, also called cervical fluid, is the fluid made by glands in the cervix. Its amount and texture change through the menstrual cycle with estrogen and progesterone. Around ovulation it becomes clear, slippery and stretchy, which helps sperm swim toward the egg. After ovulation it turns thick, sticky or dry again.

How it changes in your cycle

Cycle timeTypical mucusWhy
Just after your periodLittle or none, feels dryHormones are low
Early follicularSticky, tacky, white or cloudyEstrogen starting to rise
Approaching ovulationCreamy, lotion-like, wetterEstrogen climbing
Around ovulationClear, slippery, stretchy, like raw egg whiteEstrogen peaks
Luteal phaseThick, sticky or dryProgesterone dominates

That peak-fertility texture has its own name: egg white cervical mucus. It usually shows up in the last few days before ovulation, so it's one of the more useful signs of ovulation.

Why it matters

If you're trying to conceive, slippery mucus marks your most fertile window. If you're simply getting to know your body, it explains why your underwear looks different from week to week. The same estrogen rise that makes mucus wetter often lifts energy and mood in the days before ovulation.

Mucus can be thrown off by infections, some medicines, arousal fluid, semen and hormonal birth control, so read it as one clue among several. Learn the other textures in types of vaginal discharge.

When to talk to a doctor

See a doctor if discharge smells strong or fishy, is green, gray or frothy, looks like cottage cheese, or comes with itching, burning or pelvic pain. Those point to an infection, not your cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What does cervical mucus look like before your period?

Usually thick, sticky or creamy, or there's very little. Some people notice a wetter feeling right before bleeding starts.

Can you use cervical mucus to avoid pregnancy?

Mucus observation is part of fertility awareness methods, which need careful training and still have a meaningful failure rate. Lulu is not a contraceptive.

Is it normal to have no egg white mucus?

Some people see very little. It can vary from cycle to cycle and with age, medicines and hydration.
