Why do I get acne on my chin before my period?

2 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Chin acne before your period is classic hormonal acne. In the days before bleeding, estrogen falls while androgens like testosterone stay steady, so their effect is relatively stronger. Androgens boost oil production, and the oil glands around the chin and jaw seem especially sensitive to them. Extra oil plus dead skin clogs pores, leading to tender, deep spots along the chin and jawline.

Why the chin and jaw?

Dermatologists often see hormonal acne in adult women on the lower face: chin, jawline and around the mouth. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that women get adult acne more often than men, and that fluctuating hormones around periods are a common trigger. Oil glands in the lower face seem especially responsive to androgens. Progesterone in the luteal phase may also make skin a little puffier, squeezing pores.

PeriodBreakouts from the week before often peak, then start to calm.
FollicularRising estrogen usually means clearer, calmer skin.
OvulationSkin often at its best, though some notice a small flare.
LutealOil rises; chin and jaw spots appear in the 7 to 10 days before your period.

Other things that make chin acne worse

  • Touching your face or resting your chin on your hand
  • Phone screens and masks that rub and trap oil
  • Stress and poor sleep, which nudge hormones and inflammation
  • Picking, which pushes infection deeper and leaves marks
  • PCOS, where higher androgens cause acne plus irregular periods and extra hair growth. See PCOS.

What helps

OptionHow it helpsNotes
Benzoyl peroxide (2.5 to 5%)Kills acne bacteriaCan bleach fabric; start every other day
Salicylic acidUnclogs poresGood for blackheads and mild spots
Adapalene or retinoidsPrevents clogged poresTakes 8 to 12 weeks; avoid in pregnancy
Azelaic acidCalms redness and spotsGenerally gentle
Combined pill (prescribed)Lowers androgen effectSome pills are approved for acne
Spironolactone (prescribed)Blocks androgensOften used for adult hormonal acne
Time your routine to your cycle

Use your active treatments every day, not only when spots appear. Some people step up gentle spot care in the week before their period, when they know a flare is likely. See luteal phase skin.

Acne can do real things to your mood and confidence, especially when it lands in the same week PMS already makes you feel more sensitive. You're not imagining that link. Treating it is a perfectly good reason to see a doctor. See also why do I break out before my period and sensitive before your period.

See a doctor or dermatologist if acne is painful, deep or cystic, leaves scars or dark marks, hasn't improved after 2 to 3 months of over-the-counter treatment, or comes with irregular periods, extra facial or body hair or hair thinning, which can point to PCOS.

Frequently asked questions

Does chin acne mean hormonal imbalance?

Not necessarily. Chin acne that flares before periods is usually a normal response to normal hormone changes. If it's severe or comes with irregular periods, ask a doctor about PCOS.

How long does period chin acne last?

Usually it appears in the week before your period and calms within a week or so after bleeding starts.

Should I pop chin acne?

No. Chin spots are often deep and popping pushes inflammation further, raising the risk of scars. A warm compress and spot treatment help more.
