How it works

A days past ovulation calculator counts the days from your ovulation day to today: ovulation day is 0 DPO, the next day is 1 DPO. Implantation usually happens around 6 to 12 DPO, and most pregnancy tests become reliable from about 14 DPO, the day your period is due. Enter your ovulation day above to see where you are.

How the DPO calculator works

DPO stands for days past ovulation. It's the clock that matters most in the two-week wait, because implantation and pregnancy test timing follow ovulation, not your cycle day. If you ovulated late, cycle day 28 might only be 8 DPO.

  1. Enter your ovulation day. Use the day after your first positive LH test, or the day before your temperature rose and stayed up.
  2. Read how many DPO you are today, with a note on what's usually happening.
  3. See your earliest testing date (10 DPO, sensitive tests only) and the date tests become much more reliable (14 DPO).

The formula: DPO = today − ovulation day. Ovulation day itself is 0 DPO. Not sure when you ovulated? The ovulation calculator gives an estimate, though a DPO count from a guessed date can be off by several days.

DPO chart: what happens day by day

DPOWhat's usually happeningTest?
0Ovulation. The egg can be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hoursNo
1 to 5A fertilized egg divides as it travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus. Progesterone risesNo
6 to 7The embryo (blastocyst) reaches the uterus and the earliest implantations beginNo
8 to 10Most implantations happen in this window. Some people notice light spottingToo early
11 to 12hCG starts rising after implantation. Very sensitive tests may show a faint line for someMaybe, but a negative isn't reliable
13hCG keeps climbing, roughly doubling every 2 to 3 daysPossible
14About the day your period is due (with a 14-day luteal phase)Much more reliable
15 and laterIf your period hasn't come, a test is accurate. Retest in 2 to 3 days if negativeYes

These timings come from studies that measured hormones daily. In the Wilcox implantation study, hCG first appeared between 6 and 12 days after ovulation, most often on day 8, 9 or 10. Pregnancies that implanted later than that were more likely to end early.

Private and kind

Calculated in your browser, nothing stored. Testing early can mean riding a lot of hope and worry; waiting until 14 DPO gives you the clearest answer.

DPO symptoms: PMS or pregnancy?

Sore breasts, bloating, tiredness, cramps and mood changes are common at 5 to 12 DPO. The tricky part is that progesterone causes them whether or not you're pregnant, so they can't tell you much on their own. Our guide to PMS vs pregnancy symptoms goes through the few clues that differ, and implantation bleeding vs period helps if you see spotting.

The two-week wait sits right in the luteal phase, when many people already feel more anxious, sensitive or flat. Add the waiting, and it's no surprise this stretch can feel long. Planning distractions for 8 to 13 DPO helps a lot of people.

When to take a pregnancy test after ovulation

  • 10 to 12 DPO: only the most sensitive tests, and a negative may simply be too early.
  • 14 DPO or the day your period is due: most tests are reliable. Use first-morning urine if testing early.
  • Negative but no period: retest in 2 to 3 days. If your luteal phase is longer than 14 days or you ovulated later than you thought, you may just be earlier than you think.
  • Had an hCG trigger shot? It can cause a false positive for up to about 10 to 14 days. Follow your clinic's advice.

The pregnancy test calculator works out a test date from your period dates if you don't know your ovulation day.

When to see a doctor

Get urgent care if you have a positive test with one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness or fainting (possible ectopic pregnancy). See a doctor if your luteal phase is regularly shorter than 10 days, or if you've been trying for 12 months (6 if you're 35 or older).

Frequently asked questions

How do I know how many DPO I am?

Count the days since ovulation, with ovulation day as 0. Ovulation is usually the day after your first positive LH test, or the day before your temperature rises.

How many DPO can you get a positive pregnancy test?

Some people get a faint positive at 10 to 11 DPO with a very sensitive test, but many don't until 13 to 14 DPO or later. Testing on the day your period is due is far more reliable.

When does implantation happen?

Usually 6 to 12 days after ovulation, most often around 8 to 10 DPO.

Is 14 DPO always the day my period is due?

Only if your luteal phase is 14 days. It can be anywhere from about 10 to 16 days, so your period may be due a little earlier or later.
