Implantation bleeding or period? How to tell

2 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Implantation bleeding is lighter and shorter than a period: pink or brown spotting that lasts a few hours to two days, with no clots and little or no cramping. It happens about 10 to 14 days after ovulation, often just before your period is due. A period usually starts light, then gets heavier and redder, and lasts 2 to 7 days.

What implantation bleeding is

About 6 to 12 days after an egg is fertilized, the early embryo burrows into the lining of the uterus. That can disturb tiny blood vessels and cause a little spotting. It's harmless and it happens in roughly 1 in 4 pregnancies. Most pregnant people never notice it.

Side by side

Implantation bleedingPeriod
TimingAbout 10 to 14 days after ovulation, often a few days before your period is dueWhen your period is due
ColorLight pink or brownStarts pink or brown, turns bright to dark red
FlowSpotting; a liner is enoughGets heavier, needs a pad, tampon or cup
ClotsNoneSmall clots are common on heavy days
How longA few hours to about 2 days2 to 7 days
CrampsNone or very mildOften stronger, especially days 1 to 2
PatternStays light, then stopsBuilds up, then tapers off

The most useful clue is what it does next. Implantation spotting stays light and stops. A period ramps up within a day.

When to take a pregnancy test

During implantation bleeding, hCG is usually still too low for a test to pick up, so testing straight away often gives a false negative. Wait until the day your period was due, or at least a few days after the spotting stops. Our implantation calculator estimates when implantation might happen, and the pregnancy test calculator gives the best day to test.

Other reasons for light bleeding before a period

  • Spotting before your period, common as progesterone falls
  • Ovulation spotting in the middle of your cycle
  • Starting, missing or changing hormonal contraception
  • Irritation of the cervix after sex
  • Perimenopause, polyps or infections
Log spotting separately

Logging spotting as spotting (not as day 1) keeps your cycle predictions accurate, and shows whether light bleeding before your period is a regular pattern for you.

When to see a doctor

Get urgent care if bleeding in early pregnancy comes with severe or one-sided tummy pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or fainting, or if it becomes heavy like a period with clots. See a doctor for bleeding after sex or between periods that keeps happening.

Frequently asked questions

What does implantation bleeding look like?

A few drops or streaks of light pink or brown blood, often only when you wipe. See what implantation bleeding looks like.

Can implantation bleeding be red?

It's usually pink or brown. Bright red, heavier bleeding with clots is more likely a period or something to check with a doctor.

Can you have implantation bleeding and a negative test?

Yes, because hCG may not be high enough yet. Test again on or after the day your period was due.

Does everyone get implantation bleeding?

No. Only about a quarter of pregnant people notice any, so no bleeding doesn't mean no pregnancy.
