Can anxiety cause a late period?

Yes, anxiety can make your period late. Ongoing worry raises stress hormones, which can slow the brain signals that trigger ovulation. If ovulation comes later, your period comes later too, often by several days to a week or more. Worrying about a late period can then keep the stress going. If you could be pregnant, a test is the quickest way to settle it.
How anxiety delays a period
Your period arrives about 12 to 14 days after ovulation. The part of the cycle that can stretch is the time before ovulation, the follicular phase. Anxiety and stress activate the body's stress response, and that can quiet the brain's signals (GnRH, then LH and FSH) that bring on ovulation. Delay ovulation, and you delay the period.
Timing matters. Anxiety in the first half of your cycle is more likely to push your period back. Anxiety in the week before your period usually doesn't delay it, because ovulation has already happened. That's why people are often confused when a stressful week right before a period changes nothing.
The worry loop
- A stressful stretch delays ovulation.
- Your period doesn't arrive on the expected day.
- You worry about why, maybe about pregnancy.
- The worry keeps stress hormones high.
- Your period can feel even further away.
Breaking the loop usually starts with information. If pregnancy is possible, a test from the day your period was due gives a reliable answer; if it's negative, test again in a few days if your period still hasn't come. Our period late checker helps you work out how late you really are.
How late is too late?

Anxiety across your cycle
Anxiety and the cycle work both ways. Many people feel more anxious in the luteal phase, the week or two before their period, as hormones fall. If your anxiety spikes on a schedule, our page on anxiety before your period explains why, and tracking it can help you tell cycle-related anxiety from anxiety that needs its own support.
Your period is 3 months late with a negative test, anxiety is affecting your sleep, work or relationships, or you have panic attacks. Anxiety is very treatable. If you ever feel unable to keep yourself safe, call your local emergency number, or in the US call or text 988. In the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123.
