How late can a period be?

3 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

A period can be a few days late without anything being wrong, and it's usually called late once it's 5 or more days past due. Without pregnancy, a period can be a week or two late when ovulation is delayed by stress, illness or travel. If there's no period for 6 weeks, test; three missed periods in a row needs a doctor.

A simple late-period timeline

Why a period can be late without pregnancy

The time from ovulation to your period is fairly steady, about 12 to 14 days. So a late period nearly always means late ovulation. If you ovulated on day 24 instead of day 14, your period comes about 10 days late, and nothing is wrong. Common reasons include stress, illness, travel, changes in sleep, weight loss, hard training, coming off the pill, breastfeeding, PCOS, thyroid problems and perimenopause. See why is my period late.

What counts as late for you

"Late" depends on your own normal. If your cycles range from 26 to 34 days, a period on day 33 isn't late at all. If you're like clockwork at 28 days, day 33 is. That's why your history matters more than any rule. Use the period late checker to compare today with your usual cycle, or the cycle length calculator to find your average.

Teens and perimenopause vary more

In the first few years after periods start, cycles of up to 45 days are common. In your 40s, gaps can grow as perimenopause begins.

How a late period can feel

When ovulation is late, the whole second half of the cycle shifts. PMS may start later than you expected, or feel like it's dragging on. Add the worry of waiting, and many people feel tense, teary or snappy. That's a normal response, and it usually settles once your period arrives.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you've missed three periods in a row (or six months if your cycles are usually irregular), if periods haven't started by 15, or if a late period comes with pelvic pain, hair growth, acne, weight change or milky nipple discharge. Get urgent care for severe tummy pain with a possible pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

Is a period 10 days late normal?

It can happen without pregnancy if ovulation was delayed. Take a test, and retest after a few days if it's negative.

How late can a period be on the pill?

On the combined pill, your bleed is a withdrawal bleed and usually comes in the break. A missed bleed is worth a test. See what is a withdrawal bleed.

Can a period be a month late?

Yes, with stress, PCOS, breastfeeding or perimenopause. If it happens more than once, see a doctor.

Late period and negative test: what now?

Retest in 2 to 3 days. See late period, negative test.
