Brown discharge: what it usually means and when to check

4 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Brown discharge is almost always old blood. Blood that leaves your body slowly has time to oxidize and darken from red to brown. That's why it's common at the start or end of a period, with spotting before your period, around ovulation and with hormonal contraception. It's worth checking if it smells bad, comes with itching or pain, or happens after menopause.

Why discharge turns brown

Fresh blood is bright red. When only a little blood is mixed with your normal discharge, or it takes a while to leave the uterus, it's exposed to air and oxidizes, the same way a cut apple browns. The result ranges from light tan to dark coffee. Color alone usually tells you how old the blood is, not whether something is wrong.

Brown discharge at different times

WhenWhat it usually means
A day or two before your periodYour period starting slowly; old blood from the lining
The last days of your periodThe final, slower part of your flow. Very common
A few days after your periodLeftover blood clearing out
Mid-cycleOvulation spotting, often mixed with stretchy mucus
Around when your period is due, but lightPossible implantation bleeding: test if your period doesn't come
On hormonal contraceptionBreakthrough bleeding, especially in the first months
In your 40s with changing cyclesCommon in perimenopause
After menopauseAlways needs checking, even if it's tiny

Brown discharge before your period

This is the version people search for most. As progesterone falls at the end of the luteal phase, the lining begins to loosen and a little can come away early. If it's followed within a day or two by a normal period, it's almost always just the warm-up. If it happens for several days before every period, mention it to a doctor: it can be linked to lower progesterone, perimenopause, polyps or fibroids.

Brown discharge instead of a period

If you get brown spotting when your period is due but no proper flow, pregnancy is one possibility, so take a test. Other reasons include stress, a low-dose pill, an IUD, low body weight, intense exercise, PCOS or thyroid problems. See light period for more.

Brown discharge in early pregnancy

Light brown spotting is fairly common in early pregnancy and often settles on its own. Still, any bleeding in pregnancy is worth telling your midwife or doctor about, and bleeding with pain needs urgent care.

When brown discharge might be an infection

Brown discharge is rarely an infection on its own. But if the brown tint comes with other changes, it's worth a check:

  • A strong, fishy or unpleasant smell
  • Itching, burning or soreness
  • Pelvic pain, pain during sex or pain when peeing
  • A fever or feeling unwell
  • Brown discharge after sex that keeps happening

These can point to bacterial vaginosis, an STI such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, or pelvic inflammatory disease. They're common, treatable, and nothing to feel embarrassed about. A sexual health clinic or your doctor can test quickly. Rarely, a forgotten tampon causes dark, very smelly discharge: remove it if you can and get checked.

What helps

  • Wear a liner on the days it usually happens.
  • Wash the vulva with plain water; skip douches, perfumed soaps and wipes, which upset the vagina's natural balance.
  • Note the cycle day, color and how long it lasts. A pattern is more useful than a single day.
  • Test for pregnancy if your period is late or lighter than usual.
Your body, your normal

Everyone's discharge is a little different, and it changes across the cycle. Getting to know your own pattern makes the unusual days easy to spot, and the normal ones easy to ignore.

See a doctor if brown discharge comes with a bad smell, itching, burning, pelvic pain or fever, if it happens between periods or after sex for more than a cycle or two, or if it lasts more than a few days before every period. Get urgent help for bleeding in pregnancy with pain, cramps or dizziness. Any bleeding or brown discharge after menopause must always be checked.

Frequently asked questions

Is brown discharge normal?

Yes, usually. It's old blood, and it's very common just before, at the end of, or just after your period.

Why do I have brown discharge but no period?

It can be your period starting slowly, ovulation spotting, hormonal contraception, stress or early pregnancy. If your period is late, take a pregnancy test.

Is brown discharge a sign of pregnancy?

It can be implantation bleeding, which is light and short. But it's far more often linked to your normal cycle. A test after a missed period gives the answer.

What does brown discharge with a smell mean?

A strong or fishy smell suggests an infection such as bacterial vaginosis, or occasionally a forgotten tampon. See a doctor or sexual health clinic.

Is dark brown period blood normal?

Yes. Darker blood is older blood, common at the start and end of a period or when flow is slow.
