Why do I break out before my period?

2 min read · Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

You break out before your period because hormones shift in the luteal phase. Estrogen falls, so testosterone has relatively more effect, and progesterone can make skin swell and pores tighten. Together they boost oil and trap it, which lets acne bacteria and inflammation take hold. Breakouts often appear 7 to 10 days before bleeding, usually on the chin and jaw.

What's happening in your skin

Oil glands in the skin respond to androgens like testosterone. Across most of the cycle, estrogen partly balances them. In the luteal phase, estrogen drops while testosterone stays steady, so oil production goes up. Progesterone can also cause mild swelling around pores, narrowing them. Oil gets trapped, bacteria feed on it, and inflammation follows.

That's why hormonal breakouts tend to be deeper, sore spots rather than blackheads, and often sit on the lower face. See chin acne before your period and luteal phase acne.

Luteal phase, especially the last 7 to 10 daysOilier, more breakouts, more sensitive

What helps

  • Start treatment before the breakout. If spots arrive around day 21, use your acne routine consistently from before then.
  • Benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid for spots; adapalene (a retinoid) helps prevent them. Introduce one at a time.
  • Gentle cleansing twice a day and non-comedogenic moisturizer and makeup.
  • Don't squeeze deep spots; it raises the risk of scarring and dark marks.
  • Ask a doctor about combined birth control pills or spironolactone, which reduce the androgen effect for many people.
  • Steady sleep and stress care: stress hormones can make breakouts worse.

Skin and mood often move together

Breakouts tend to arrive in the same luteal week as PMS mood changes, and can make you feel worse about yourself. Knowing both are temporary, and timed, can take some sting out of them. See low self-esteem before your period.

See a doctor or dermatologist if acne is painful, leaves scars or dark marks, doesn't improve after 3 months of over-the-counter treatment, or affects how you feel about yourself. Also mention it if acne comes with irregular periods or extra hair growth, which can be signs of PCOS.

Frequently asked questions

How long before my period do breakouts start?

Often 7 to 10 days before bleeding, in the luteal phase, and they usually calm down once your period starts.

Why do I only break out on my chin before my period?

The lower face and jaw have oil glands that are especially sensitive to androgens, so hormonal acne tends to cluster there.

Do breakouts before my period mean I'm not pregnant?

No. Skin changes can happen in early pregnancy too. Only a test can tell.

Does diet cause period acne?

Diet isn't the main cause. Some people find high-sugar foods or dairy make it worse, but hormones drive period breakouts.
