Egg white discharge: what it says about ovulation

Egg white discharge is clear, slippery cervical mucus that stretches between your fingers like raw egg white. It appears in the days just before and around ovulation, when estrogen peaks, and helps sperm travel and survive. It's a sign you're in your fertile window. After ovulation, progesterone turns it thicker and cloudier within a day or two.
What egg white discharge looks like
It's clear or slightly cloudy, wet and slippery, and it stretches a few centimeters between finger and thumb without breaking. You might notice it on toilet paper, feel extra wetness in your underwear, or see a clear, stringy blob. There's often more of it than usual. Some people see a little pink or brown in it, which can be harmless ovulation spotting.
How cervical mucus changes through your cycle
Your cervix makes mucus whose texture follows your hormones. Rising estrogen makes it wetter and stretchier. After ovulation, progesterone makes it thick and sticky, which helps block sperm.
| Cycle stage | Typical mucus | Fertility |
|---|---|---|
| Just after your period | Little or none, feels dry | Lower |
| Early follicular | Sticky, tacky, white or cloudy | Rising |
| Late follicular | Creamy, lotion-like, wetter | Higher |
| Just before and at ovulation | Clear, slippery, stretchy: egg white | Peak |
| After ovulation (luteal) | Thick, sticky, cloudy, or dry | Low |
Egg white mucus usually shows up for one to several days, with the last day of slippery mucus (sometimes called the peak day) falling close to ovulation. Because sperm can survive up to about five days in fertile mucus, sex on egg white days, or just before, gives the best chance of pregnancy.
How to check your cervical mucus
- Check at the same time each day, before peeing if you can, with clean hands.
- Wipe with clean toilet paper and look at the color and texture, or gently take a sample from just inside the vagina.
- Stretch it between finger and thumb. Egg white mucus stretches; creamy mucus breaks quickly.
- Note how it feels too: dry, sticky, creamy, wet or slippery.
- Log it daily. Patterns appear after one or two cycles.
Mucus is more reliable alongside other signs. A positive LH (ovulation) test usually comes just before ovulation, and a sustained temperature rise confirms it has already happened. Our ovulation calculator gives a rough starting estimate.
Egg white mucus and trying to conceive
Fertile mucus isn't just a signal: it does a job. Its watery, stringy structure forms channels that help sperm swim up through the cervix, filters out abnormal sperm, and keeps sperm nourished for several days. That's why the days with the wettest, most slippery mucus are usually the most fertile days of the cycle, often more useful to know than a calendar estimate.
If you're trying to conceive, having sex every one to two days once mucus turns creamy and wet, through the egg white days, covers your fertile window without needing to pinpoint ovulation exactly. Avoid lubricants that aren't labeled fertility-friendly, as many can slow sperm. If you rarely see fertile mucus, or your cycles are irregular, mention it to a doctor early rather than waiting.
What can change your mucus
- Hormonal contraception usually stops ovulation, so you may never see egg white mucus.
- Arousal fluid and semen can be mistaken for fertile mucus.
- Infections change discharge color, smell and texture.
- Antihistamines and some other medicines can dry mucus.
- PCOS can cause several patches of egg white mucus in one cycle without ovulation.
- Breastfeeding and perimenopause make patterns less predictable.
Fertility awareness methods take careful training and are much less effective in typical use than most contraceptives. Lulu is not a method of contraception, and mucus tracking alone shouldn't be used to avoid pregnancy. See a doctor if your discharge changes color or smell, comes with itching, pain or fever, or if you've been trying to conceive for 12 months (6 if over 35) without success.
Egg white days and mood
The same estrogen peak that brings egg white mucus often brings your most confident, social and energetic days, and for many people a higher sex drive. It's a lovely phase to notice. A few days later, as progesterone rises, energy often softens. See ovulation mood.
Frequently asked questions
How long does egg white discharge last?
Usually one to several days around ovulation. The last day of slippery, stretchy mucus tends to be closest to ovulation.
Does egg white discharge mean I'm ovulating?
It means estrogen is high and ovulation is likely close, but it doesn't confirm ovulation happened. A temperature rise afterwards does.
Can you have egg white discharge and not ovulate?
Yes. With PCOS or in some cycles, estrogen can rise without ovulation following, so you may see egg white mucus more than once.
Why don't I get egg white discharge?
Some people make less or don't notice it. Hormonal contraception, some medicines, breastfeeding and age can also reduce it.
Is egg white discharge a sign of pregnancy?
No, it's a sign of the fertile window. Pregnancy signs come later, around a missed period.
