Can you get pregnant right after your period?

Yes, you can. Sperm can survive up to about 5 days, so sex just after your period can lead to pregnancy if you ovulate early. This is more likely if your cycles are short, around 21 to 24 days, or your period is long. The chance is lower in the first day or two after bleeding and rises as ovulation gets closer.
How pregnancy right after a period happens
The fertile window is the 6 days ending on ovulation day. Sperm can live in fertile cervical mucus for several days, so sex before ovulation counts. If you ovulate early, the fertile window can start very soon after your period ends.
Here's an example. With a 22-day cycle and a 6-day period, ovulation might happen around day 8. The fertile window would then start around day 3, while you're still bleeding, and sex on day 7, the first day after your period, would fall right inside it.
| Cycle length | Likely ovulation | Fertile window roughly | Right after a 5-day period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21 days | Around day 7 | Days 2 to 7 | Fertile |
| 24 days | Around day 10 | Days 5 to 10 | Fertile |
| 28 days | Around day 14 | Days 9 to 14 | Lower chance, rising within days |
| 32 days | Around day 18 | Days 13 to 18 | Lower chance |
These are averages. Ovulation moves from cycle to cycle, and a large study found only about 30% of women had their whole fertile window between days 10 and 17. Many reach it earlier.
The days after your period are not reliably "safe". Lulu's fertile window is an estimate and Lulu is not contraception. If you don't want to get pregnant, use a proven method, and ask a pharmacist about emergency contraception after unprotected sex.
If you're trying to get pregnant
The opposite is useful too. If you have short cycles, starting to have sex soon after your period ends gives sperm a head start. Many doctors suggest sex every 2 to 3 days through the cycle so you don't need to time it perfectly. Our fertile window calculator and ovulation calculator give an estimate, and how many days after period is ovulation explains the timing.
What to do now
- If you don't want to be pregnant, ask a pharmacist or doctor about emergency contraception as soon as possible after unprotected sex.
- Take a pregnancy test from the day your next period is due.
- If you don't know when that is, test at least 21 days after the sex.
- If the test is negative and your period still doesn't come, test again a few days later.
See a doctor if your cycles are often shorter than 21 days, if you bleed between periods, or if you've been trying to conceive for 12 months (6 months if you're 35 or older). Get urgent help for one-sided pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or fainting if you could be pregnant.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get pregnant the day after your period ends?
Yes, it's possible, especially with a short cycle or a long period, because sperm can wait several days for an early ovulation.
How many days after my period am I safe?
There's no reliably safe day. Ovulation timing varies, so counting days isn't a dependable way to avoid pregnancy. See our safe days explainer.
Can you get pregnant on your period?
It's less likely but possible. See can you get pregnant on your period.
Is it easier to get pregnant right after your period?
Not usually. The chance rises as ovulation approaches and is highest in the 2 days before ovulation.
