How many days after your period do you ovulate?

3 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Most people ovulate about 7 to 10 days after their period ends, but it depends on your cycle length. Ovulation usually happens 12 to 14 days before your next period, so with a 28-day cycle and a 5-day period, that's around day 14: about 9 days after bleeding stops. Shorter cycles bring it closer to your period.

How to work it out for your cycle

Ovulation is easier to count backwards from your next period than forwards from your last one. The time from ovulation to your period, the luteal phase, is usually 12 to 14 days. So:

  1. Take your usual cycle length (for example, 30 days).
  2. Subtract 14 to get your likely ovulation day (day 16).
  3. Subtract the number of days you bleed (for example, 5).
  4. The result is roughly how many days after your period you ovulate (about 11).

Why the answer is a range, not a date

Ovulation day moves from cycle to cycle. In a study that measured ovulation with daily hormone tests, only about 30% of women had their fertile days entirely within days 10 to 17, and even women with regular cycles sometimes ovulated much earlier or later. In a large app study, the first half of the cycle averaged 16.9 days, with a wide spread from 10 to 30.

So treat any calculated day as a best guess. Real signs of ovulation narrow it down: stretchy, clear discharge, a positive LH test, a small temperature rise afterwards, or one-sided ovulation pain. See signs of ovulation.

Estimates only

Calendar estimates can't tell you a day is safe from pregnancy. If you don't want to get pregnant, use contraception. Lulu's fertile window is for understanding your cycle, not birth control.

What the days after your period feel like

The stretch between your period and ovulation is the follicular phase. Estrogen climbs, and many people notice better mood, more energy and more confidence as ovulation gets close. If you know when it's coming, it's a good time for the plans that take the most out of you.

When to talk to a doctor

See a doctor if your cycles are often shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days, if you have no signs of ovulation for several cycles, if ovulation pain is severe or lasts more than a day or two, or if you've been trying to conceive for 12 months (6 months if you're 35 or older).

Frequently asked questions

Can you ovulate right after your period?

Yes, with short cycles ovulation can come just a few days after bleeding stops. That's why pregnancy shortly after a period is possible.

Do you always ovulate 14 days after your period starts?

No. Day 14 is only typical for a 28-day cycle, and even then it varies. Count back about 14 days from your next expected period instead.

How long does ovulation last?

The egg lives about 12 to 24 hours after release, but your fertile window is about six days because sperm can survive up to five. See how long does ovulation last.

Can you ovulate twice in one cycle?

More than one egg can be released, but it happens within about a day, which is how non-identical twins form. You don't get two separate fertile windows weeks apart.
