How long does ovulation last?

2 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

The release of the egg itself happens quickly, and the egg then survives about 12 to 24 hours. Because sperm can live up to about 5 days, the fertile window lasts about 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day. Ovulation symptoms, like stretchy discharge or one-sided twinges, can last a day or two.

The timeline of ovulation

StageHow long it lasts
Follicle growingAbout 1 to 3 weeks, varies most between cycles
LH surgeOvulation usually follows within about 24 to 36 hours of the surge
Egg release (ovulation)A short event, over in minutes
Egg survivalAbout 12 to 24 hours
Fertile windowAbout 6 days, ending on ovulation day
Luteal phase (ovulation to period)About 12 to 14 days for most people

So when people ask how long ovulation lasts, they usually mean one of three things: the egg's lifespan (about a day), the fertile window (about 6 days), or the days they feel ovulation symptoms (often 1 to 2 days).

Why the fertile window is longer than ovulation

Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days in fertile cervical mucus, typically up to 5 days. That means sex in the days before ovulation can lead to pregnancy, because sperm are already waiting when the egg arrives. A landmark study found pregnancies came only from sex in the 6-day window ending on ovulation day. Read more in what is the fertile window and how many days are you fertile.

Not contraception

Ovulation timing changes from cycle to cycle, even in regular cycles. Estimates of ovulation or "safe" days are not a reliable way to avoid pregnancy, and Lulu is not contraception.

How long ovulation symptoms last

  • Egg-white discharge: clear and stretchy for about 1 to 3 days before and on ovulation.
  • Ovulation pain (mittelschmerz): a one-sided twinge or ache lasting minutes to a day or two.
  • Higher libido and confidence: often noticed across the few days around ovulation.
  • Temperature rise: basal body temperature goes up slightly after ovulation and stays up until your period.

Many people feel their most social and energetic around ovulation, when estrogen peaks. See ovulation mood and signs of ovulation.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if ovulation pain is severe or lasts more than a couple of days, if you have fever or vomiting with pelvic pain, if your cycles are very irregular, or if you've been trying to get pregnant for 12 months (6 months if you're 35 or older).

Frequently asked questions

Can ovulation last for 2 or 3 days?

The egg release itself doesn't, but symptoms and fertile mucus can last a few days, and occasionally a second egg is released within 24 hours.

How long after a positive ovulation test do you ovulate?

Usually within about 24 to 36 hours of the LH surge that turns the test positive.

What day of my cycle do I ovulate?

Usually about 12 to 16 days before your next period. Try our ovulation calculator.

Can you ovulate twice in one cycle?

Two eggs can be released in the same ovulation, which is how non-identical twins happen, but a second ovulation days later in the same cycle is very unusual.
