Can you feel ovulation? Signs your body gives you

2 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Many people can. The most common feeling is ovulation pain (mittelschmerz): a dull ache or sharp twinge low on one side of the belly, lasting minutes to a day or two. Others notice clear, stretchy discharge, a higher sex drive, mild bloating, breast tenderness or feeling more social. Plenty of people feel nothing at all, and that's normal too.

What ovulation can feel like

SignWhat you might noticeWhen
Ovulation painA dull ache, cramp or sharp twinge on one side, can switch sides month to monthAround ovulation, minutes to 48 hours
Egg-white dischargeClear, slippery, stretchy mucus1 to 3 days before and on ovulation
Higher libidoFeeling more interested in sexThe few days around ovulation
Mood and energy liftMore social, confident, chattyAs estrogen peaks
Breast tendernessMild sorenessJust after ovulation
Light spottingA little pink dischargeAround ovulation, in some people
Mild bloatingA fuller bellyAround ovulation

Ovulation pain is thought to come from the follicle stretching the surface of the ovary, or from a little fluid or blood irritating the lining of the belly when the egg is released. It's usually harmless. See ovulation pain for relief tips.

How to confirm what you're feeling

Feelings alone can't pinpoint ovulation. To check whether your twinge lines up with ovulation, combine it with other signs:

  • LH tests turn positive about 24 to 36 hours before ovulation.
  • Basal body temperature rises slightly after ovulation and stays up. See basal body temperature.
  • Cervical mucus turns clear and stretchy at your most fertile.
  • Timing: ovulation is usually about 12 to 16 days before your next period.

Not contraception

Feeling ovulation isn't a reliable way to avoid pregnancy: the fertile window starts up to 5 days before ovulation, and feelings vary. Lulu is not contraception.

Ovulation and mood

Around ovulation, estrogen peaks and testosterone rises a little. Many people feel their most energetic and outgoing. A few notice a short mood dip or anxiety right after ovulation as estrogen briefly falls. See ovulation mood and mood swings during ovulation.

See a doctor if mid-cycle pain is severe, lasts more than 2 days, or comes with fever, vomiting, heavy bleeding or pain when peeing. Get urgent help for sudden severe one-sided pain, especially if you could be pregnant, as it can signal an ectopic pregnancy or ovarian cyst problems.
