Safe days calculator: why calendar safe days can't prevent pregnancy

Fertile window: Sun, Oct 25 – Sat, Oct 31
Calendar “safe days” are not a reliable method of contraception. Cycles shift, ovulation moves, and sperm can live up to five days. Use this to understand your cycle, not to avoid pregnancy.
- Fertile Sun, Oct 25 – Sat, Oct 31 · ovulation ~Fri, Oct 30
- Fertile Sun, Nov 22 – Sat, Nov 28 · ovulation ~Fri, Nov 27
- Fertile Sun, Dec 20 – Sat, Dec 26 · ovulation ~Fri, Dec 25
- Fertile Sun, Jan 17 – Sat, Jan 23 · ovulation ~Fri, Jan 22
🔒 Calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored. Estimates only: cycles vary.
No calculator can tell you which days are safe from pregnancy. A calendar can estimate your fertile window, but ovulation often comes earlier or later than predicted and sperm can survive up to 5 to 7 days. Used on their own, calendar safe days fail often. The tool above shows your estimated fertile window for understanding your cycle only; Lulu is not contraception.
What the tool above shows, and what it doesn't
It estimates your fertile window: the five days before ovulation, ovulation day and the day after, with ovulation placed 14 days before your next expected period. It does not mark any day as safe. Days outside the estimate can still be fertile, because the estimate is built on averages and your body doesn't follow averages every month.
Calendar safe days are not a reliable method of contraception. Lulu is a cycle and mood tracker, not contraception, and should never be used to avoid pregnancy. If you want to avoid pregnancy, talk to a doctor, nurse or pharmacist about contraception.
Why calendar safe days fail
- Ovulation moves. Stress, illness, travel, sleep and many other things can shift it by days, without warning, even in regular cycles.
- Sperm live a long time. Up to 5 days is typical in fertile mucus, and the NHS says up to 7. Sex several days before an early ovulation can lead to pregnancy.
- The fertile window is rarely where you'd expect. US researchers found only about 30% of women had their fertile window entirely within days 10 to 17. Some were fertile on any day of the cycle, including during or just after their period.
- Averages hide variation. In a study of 600,000 cycles, the average ovulation day was 16.9 and varied widely between and within people.
The numbers on fertility awareness
Fertility awareness methods are not the same as counting calendar days. Properly taught methods combine several signs every day, such as temperature, cervical mucus and cycle history, and need training. Even so, the NHS gives these figures:
| How it's used | Effectiveness (NHS) | What that means over a year |
|---|---|---|
| Fertility awareness, followed exactly, with training | 91% to 99% | 1 to 9 in 100 people get pregnant |
| Fertility awareness, typical use | about 76% | about 24 in 100 people get pregnant |
| Calendar counting alone | Less reliable than combined methods | Not recommended on its own |
For comparison, implants, IUDs and the IUS are over 99% effective with very little room for mistakes. A doctor or sexual health clinic can help you find a method that suits you.
Safe days after your period?
The days right after a period feel safe, but they aren't guaranteed. With a short cycle, say 21 to 24 days, ovulation can happen around day 7 to 10, and sperm from sex on day 4 or 5 can still be waiting. That's how pregnancy happens from sex during or soon after a period. See can you get pregnant on your period and pregnant right after your period.
What the fertile window is good for
Knowing your fertile window is genuinely useful when you're trying to get pregnant, and for understanding your body: why your discharge changes, why you might feel more energetic, social or interested in sex mid-cycle, and when PMS is likely to follow. Use the fertile window calculator or the ovulation calculator for that.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a safe period to avoid pregnancy?
Not one a calendar can find reliably. Ovulation and sperm survival vary too much. Talk to a doctor or nurse about contraception.
How many days after my period am I safe?
There's no guaranteed number. With short cycles, you can be fertile within a few days of your period ending.
What is the calendar method?
Using past cycle lengths to estimate fertile days. It's the least reliable fertility awareness approach when used on its own.
Is Lulu a form of birth control?
No. Lulu is a cycle and mood tracker. It does not prevent pregnancy and should not be used to avoid it.
