Can you have a period and still be pregnant?

2 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

No, not a true period. Once you're pregnant, the uterine lining isn't shed in a monthly cycle. But bleeding in early pregnancy is common, affecting about 15 to 25 in 100 pregnancies in the first trimester, and it can look like a light period. Causes include implantation, cervical changes, and sometimes miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Bleeding in pregnancy should always be checked.

Why pregnancy stops periods

A period happens when progesterone falls at the end of the luteal phase and the uterine lining sheds. In pregnancy, the developing placenta makes hCG, which keeps progesterone high, so the lining stays in place. That's why a missed period is often the first sign of pregnancy.

What bleeding in early pregnancy can be

CauseWhat it's often like
Implantation bleedingLight pink or brown spotting around when your period is due, hours to 2 days
Cervical changesLight spotting, often after sex or an exam, because the cervix is more sensitive
Subchorionic hematomaBleeding from a small collection of blood near the placenta, found on ultrasound
InfectionSpotting with unusual discharge, itching or odor
MiscarriageBleeding that gets heavier, with cramps or passing tissue
Ectopic pregnancySpotting with one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness: an emergency

Many people who bleed in early pregnancy go on to have a healthy pregnancy. But because some causes are serious, bleeding should always be checked.

Bleeding and not sure if you're pregnant?

  1. Notice whether the bleeding is lighter, shorter or a different color from your usual period.
  2. If it's unusually light, or you have pregnancy symptoms, take a test. Most are reliable from the day your period is late.
  3. If you get a positive test and are bleeding, contact your doctor or midwife.
  4. If you're not pregnant but your periods have changed, track them and mention it to a doctor.

When to get help

If you're pregnant and bleeding, contact your doctor or midwife. Get urgent help for heavy bleeding (soaking a pad an hour), bleeding with severe or one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness or fainting, or passing tissue. These can be signs of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

What does bleeding in early pregnancy look like?
