Menstrual health: definition and meaning

Definition

Menstrual health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in relation to the menstrual cycle, not just the absence of disease. It includes accurate information, access to products and facilities, care for period problems, freedom from stigma, and being able to take part in life on every cycle day. Doctors also call the cycle a vital sign.

What a healthy cycle usually looks like

MeasureTypical adult range
Cycle length24 to 38 days

Period lengthup to 8 days

The cycle as a vital sign

ACOG calls the menstrual cycle a vital sign, especially in young people. Changes can be early clues to thyroid problems, PCOS, low energy availability, anemia or stress. Tracking dates, flow, pain and mood gives you and a doctor a clear picture.

Mental health is part of it

Mood shifts across the cycle are normal for many people. Menstrual health includes recognizing when they become too much, as in PMDD, and getting support without being told it's "just hormones". It also includes freedom from shame and period poverty.

See a doctor if your periods stop for 3 months, come more often than every 21 days, last longer than 8 days, are very heavy or very painful, you bleed between periods or after sex, or your mood before periods seriously affects your life.
