Ovulation after miscarriage calculator: when your cycle comes back

Ovulation can return from about Friday, October 30
After an early loss, ovulation often comes back 2 to 4 weeks later (Fri, Oct 30 – Fri, Nov 13), and the first period usually arrives 4 to 6 weeks after (Fri, Nov 13 – Fri, Nov 27). That means you can get pregnant before your first period. Be gentle with yourself; there’s no right timeline for trying again.

This ovulation after miscarriage calculator starts from the day the pregnancy ended. After an early loss, ovulation often returns 2 to 4 weeks later, and the first period usually follows 4 to 6 weeks after the loss, though it can take up to 8 weeks. Because ovulation comes first, you can get pregnant before your first period.
If you're here after a loss, we're so sorry. However it happened and however far along you were, your feelings make sense. There's no right way to grieve and no right time to think about your cycle again. Take what's useful from this page and leave the rest.
How the ovulation after miscarriage calculator works
Pregnancy hormones take a little while to fall after a miscarriage. Once they do, the brain restarts the usual cycle: an egg matures, ovulation happens, and about two weeks later a period arrives. The calculator uses the day the pregnancy ended (the day the bleeding started, or the date of the procedure) and shows:
- Ovulation can return from about 2 weeks after the loss, often between 2 and 4 weeks.
- Your first period usually arrives 4 to 6 weeks after the loss.
- The dates for both, so you know roughly what to expect.

What to expect after a loss
| After the loss | What's common |
|---|---|
| First 1 to 2 weeks | Bleeding or spotting that slowly eases, and some cramping for a few days |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Ovulation often returns. You may notice clear, stretchy discharge |
| Weeks 4 to 6 | First period for many people. It can be heavier or longer than usual |
| Up to 8 weeks | Still within the normal range for the first period, the NHS says |
| The next few months | Cycles settle back into their usual pattern |
A pregnancy test can stay positive for a few weeks while hCG falls, so it won't tell you much in the first weeks. Ovulation tests can also be confused by leftover hCG at first.
Worked example
The bleeding started on 3 March. Ovulation could return from around 17 March, most often between 17 and 31 March. Your first period would usually arrive between 31 March and 14 April. If you get to late April with no period and a negative test, it's worth a call to your doctor.
Ovulation after abortion
The body works the same way after an abortion, and it can be faster. Research summarized in the Medical Journal of Australia notes that ovulation can happen as early as 8 days after an abortion, and the NHS advises that it's possible to get pregnant straight afterwards. If you don't want to be pregnant again now, it's worth starting contraception right away: your clinic can help. If you are hoping to conceive later, your fertility should return to what it was before.
Trying again, when you're ready
The NHS says you can try for another pregnancy when you feel ready and your symptoms have gone, and that most people who have a miscarriage go on to have a healthy pregnancy. Some people want to try straight away; others need months. Both are okay. Waiting for one period can make dating a new pregnancy easier, but it isn't required.
Your feelings after a loss
Hormones drop quickly after a pregnancy ends, and grief can arrive in waves: sadness, numbness, anger, guilt, relief, or all of them on one day. The first cycles can feel emotional too, especially around the dates you were expecting. Be as kind to yourself as you would be to a friend. If you'd like someone to talk to, the All-Options Talkline (US, 1-888-493-0092) offers free, judgment-free support after miscarriage or abortion, and Tommy's (UK, 0800 0147 800) supports people after pregnancy loss.

If low mood lasts more than a couple of weeks or you ever feel unsafe, please talk to a doctor. In the US you can call or text 988 any time.
When to get medical help
Get urgent help if you soak through a pad an hour for 2 hours or more, pass large clots, have a fever or chills, severe belly or shoulder pain, smelly discharge, or feel faint or dizzy. Call your doctor if pain or bleeding isn't easing after a few days, you still feel pregnant a week after an abortion, or your period hasn't returned within 8 weeks. After 3 or more miscarriages, ask about tests to look for a cause.

How soon do you ovulate after a miscarriage?
Often 2 to 4 weeks after an early loss, sometimes sooner. It can take longer after a later loss or if your cycles were irregular before.

Yes. Ovulation comes about two weeks before a period, so you can conceive before you've had your first period.

How soon can you ovulate after an abortion?
Ovulation can happen as early as 8 days afterwards and often within the first month. If you don't want to get pregnant, start contraception straight away.
