White discharge before your period: what's normal and what's not

White discharge is usually healthy. After ovulation, progesterone makes cervical mucus thicker, creamier and whiter, so milky or thick white discharge is common in the week or two before your period. It's also common in early pregnancy. White discharge that's thick and lumpy like cottage cheese with itching suggests thrush, and gray-white discharge with a fishy smell suggests bacterial vaginosis.
Why discharge turns white before your period
Your cervix makes mucus that changes with your hormones. Around ovulation, high estrogen makes it clear, slippery and stretchy. After ovulation, in the luteal phase, progesterone takes over and the mucus becomes thicker, stickier and white or creamy. Some people have less discharge in this phase; others notice a creamy white increase just before their period. Both are normal.
White discharge may also look slightly yellowish once it dries on underwear. That's usually just oxidation, not infection.
Types of white discharge
| What you notice | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Creamy, lotion-like white | Normal, common after your period and before ovulation | Nothing needed |
| Thick, sticky white before your period | Normal luteal-phase mucus | Nothing needed |
| Milky white, more than usual, no smell | Common in early pregnancy and on some contraception | Test if your period is late |
| Thick, lumpy, like cottage cheese, with itching or soreness | Possible thrush (yeast infection) | See a pharmacist or doctor |
| Thin, gray-white, fishy smell, worse after sex | Possible bacterial vaginosis | See a doctor or clinic |
| White with pelvic pain, fever or bleeding after sex | Possible STI or pelvic infection | Get checked promptly |
White discharge and early pregnancy
Rising estrogen and blood flow in early pregnancy often increase discharge. It's typically thin to milky white with a mild smell (sometimes called leukorrhea). Because luteal-phase discharge looks similar, discharge alone can't tell you whether you're pregnant. If your period is late, a test is the way to know. See PMS vs pregnancy symptoms.
Thrush vs normal white discharge
Thrush is a common yeast infection. It's more likely after antibiotics, in pregnancy, with poorly controlled diabetes, and for some people in the days before their period. Signs that point to thrush rather than normal discharge:
- Itching and irritation around the vulva and vagina
- Soreness or stinging, especially when peeing or during sex
- Thick, white, clumpy discharge with little or no smell
- Redness or small cracks in the skin
Pharmacies sell thrush treatment, but if it's your first time, you're pregnant, under 16 or over 60, it keeps coming back (four or more times a year), or treatment doesn't work, see a doctor. Bacterial vaginosis and STIs can look similar and need different treatment.
Bacterial vaginosis: the other common cause
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) happens when the usual balance of bacteria in the vagina shifts. It isn't a sexually transmitted infection, but it's more common after a new partner, and with douching or scented products. The discharge is usually thin, gray-white and more plentiful, with a strong fishy smell that can be stronger after sex or during your period. It often doesn't itch. BV is treated with antibiotics from a doctor or clinic, and treating it matters, especially in pregnancy.
Keeping discharge healthy
- Wash the vulva with plain water or an unscented wash, once a day is plenty.
- Avoid douches, scented pads, bubble baths and feminine sprays.
- Wear breathable cotton underwear and change out of wet swimwear or sweaty gym clothes.
- Use condoms with new partners; they help prevent STIs and BV.

Logging discharge for a couple of cycles shows you a pattern: dry, then creamy, then stretchy around ovulation, then thick and white before your period. Once you know your normal, it's much easier to notice when something changes.
Discharge, body and mood
Thicker discharge before your period lines up with the luteal phase, when many people feel more sensitive, tired or self-conscious about their bodies. Itching or worry about an infection can add a lot of stress to an already heavy week. Please know that vaginal infections are extremely common and treatable, and asking for help is completely normal. See mood by cycle phase.
See a doctor, pharmacist or sexual health clinic if white discharge comes with itching, soreness, a strong or fishy smell, a change in color to gray, green or yellow, pain when peeing, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods or after sex. Get care quickly for discharge with fever and pelvic pain. If you're pregnant, mention any new discharge to your midwife or doctor, and seek urgent care for watery fluid, bleeding or pain.
Frequently asked questions
Is white discharge before your period normal?
Yes. Progesterone after ovulation makes discharge thicker, creamier and whiter, so it's very common in the week or two before your period.
Does thick white discharge mean pregnancy?
It can happen in early pregnancy, but it's just as common before a period. A test after a missed period is the only way to know.
How do I know if white discharge is thrush?
Thrush usually brings itching or soreness and thick, lumpy, cottage-cheese-like discharge. Normal white discharge doesn't itch.
Why do I have so much white discharge?
Amount varies with your cycle, arousal, pregnancy and contraception. A sudden increase with smell, itching or color change is worth checking.
