Can you ovulate without having a period?

3 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Yes. Ovulation comes about two weeks before a period, so it's possible to ovulate before you've had a period at all: before your first ever period, before your first period after birth or breastfeeding, after stopping the pill, or after a long gap in perimenopause or with PCOS. That's why pregnancy can happen when you haven't seen a period for months.

Ovulation comes first, the period comes after

It's easy to think of your period as the start of fertility, but in the hormone story it's the end of a cycle. An egg is released at ovulation; about 12 to 14 days later, if there's no pregnancy, progesterone falls and you bleed. So after any stretch without periods, the first thing that returns is ovulation. You only find out it happened when your period arrives two weeks later.

When it's most likely to happen

SituationWhat it means
Before your very first periodThe first ovulation comes before the first period, so pregnancy is possible even then
After giving birthYou can ovulate before your first postpartum period, from about 3 weeks after birth if not breastfeeding
While breastfeedingAs feeds drop, ovulation can return before bleeding does
After stopping hormonal contraceptionOvulation can return within weeks, before your first natural period
PerimenopauseAfter months without a period, an egg can still be released
PCOS or low energy (hypothalamic amenorrhea)Ovulation is occasional and unpredictable; one can happen without warning

Can you ovulate and still not get a period?

If you ovulate and aren't pregnant, a period normally follows. The main reasons it wouldn't are pregnancy, or a very rare problem with the lining (such as scarring after surgery). If you think you ovulated and your period hasn't come two weeks later, take a pregnancy test. See late period, negative test if it's negative.

Signs you might be ovulating

  • Clear, stretchy, egg-white discharge. See ovulation discharge.
  • A positive LH (ovulation) test
  • A sustained rise in basal body temperature or wrist temperature afterward
  • One-sided pelvic twinges. See can you feel ovulation.
  • Higher libido and a lift in mood and energy
Lulu is not contraception

Lulu can show signs that your cycle is returning, like temperature shifts and mood changes, but it can't promise when you're not fertile. If you don't want to be pregnant, use contraception even if you haven't had a period yet.

The other way round is also true: you can have a period without ovulating. Bleeding and ovulation usually go together, but not always.

See a doctor if you haven't had a period for 3 months (and you're not pregnant, breastfeeding or past menopause), if you're 15 and haven't started your periods, or if you've been trying to conceive for 12 months (6 if you're over 35). Seek care urgently for one-sided pelvic pain with a positive test.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get pregnant without having a period first?

Yes. Because ovulation comes before bleeding, pregnancy can happen before a first period, after birth, or after stopping contraception.

Can you ovulate on the pill?

The combined pill stops ovulation when taken correctly. Missed pills, vomiting or some medicines can let ovulation happen.

How soon after stopping the pill do you ovulate?

Often within a few weeks, sometimes longer. See period after stopping birth control.
