Short menstrual cycle: definition and meaning

2 min read 路 Updated October 27, 2026

Definition

A short menstrual cycle is one lasting fewer than 21 days, counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Cycles of 21 to 24 days are on the short side of normal. Short cycles are common in the teen years and in perimenopause, and can also be caused by stress, thyroid problems or a short luteal phase.

Normal vs short

Cycle lengthWhat it usually means
21 to 35 daysNormal adult range
21 to 24 daysShort end of normal, common in your late 30s and 40s
Under 21 daysShort cycle (polymenorrhea), worth a check if it keeps happening

Common causes

  • Perimenopause, when the follicular phase shortens
  • Puberty, as cycles settle
  • Stress, illness, travel or big changes in exercise
  • A short luteal phase (luteal phase defect)
  • Thyroid problems
  • Bleeding that isn't a period, such as ovulation spotting, polyps or fibroids

Short cycles and mood

With a short cycle, the gap between one PMS week and the next is smaller, so it can feel like you're always either premenstrual or bleeding. Tracking mood alongside your cycle helps you see how much clear time you really have, and when to protect it. Learn more about cycle length.

See a doctor if your cycles are regularly under 21 days, you bleed between periods or after sex, bleeding is heavy, or you feel tired and breathless, which can mean anemia.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get pregnant with a short cycle?

Yes. Ovulation comes earlier, sometimes just a few days after your period ends, so the fertile window may start sooner than you'd expect.

Is a 20-day cycle bad?

Not necessarily, but if it happens regularly it's worth checking for causes like thyroid problems or a short luteal phase.
