What is seed cycling?

2 min read 路 Updated October 27, 2026

Definition

Seed cycling is a popular wellness practice of eating specific seeds in each half of the menstrual cycle: usually flax and pumpkin seeds in the follicular phase, then sesame and sunflower seeds in the luteal phase, about one tablespoon of each daily. It claims to balance hormones, but there is no good scientific evidence that it changes hormone levels or symptoms.

Luteal, ovulation to periodsesame + sunflowerlignans and vitamin E to support progesterone

What the evidence says

There are no good clinical trials of seed cycling itself. The idea stitches together findings about individual nutrients. Flaxseed lignans have weak plant-estrogen effects, and one small 1993 study found flaxseed linked to slightly more ovulatory cycles, but that does not show that timed seeds "balance" anything. Your hormones are run by the brain and ovaries, and a tablespoon of seeds does not switch them by phase.

  • What is true: seeds are nutritious, with fiber, healthy fats, magnesium and zinc.
  • What is not shown: that rotating them fixes PMS, PCOS, irregular periods, acne or estrogen dominance.
  • What to watch: delaying medical care for symptoms that need it.

A kinder way to use it

If you enjoy seed cycling as a ritual that helps you notice your cycle, that is fine, and seeds are a healthy food. Just don't judge yourself if symptoms continue. Approaches with better evidence for PMS include regular exercise, calcium, sleep and, when needed, medical treatment. See cycle syncing and does cycle syncing work.

See a doctor rather than relying on diet changes if your periods are irregular, very heavy or painful, or your premenstrual mood seriously affects your life.

Frequently asked questions

Can seed cycling regulate my period?

There is no evidence it does. Irregular periods have many causes worth checking with a doctor.

Is seed cycling harmful?

For most people, no. Seeds are healthy, but very large amounts of flax can upset digestion, and seeds can trigger allergies in some people.
