Menarche: definition and meaning

Menarche is the medical term for a person's first menstrual period. It's a milestone of puberty and usually happens between ages 10 and 15, with an average of about 12 in the US. It typically comes about two to three years after breasts start to develop. In the first few years, periods are often irregular, and that's normal.
Signs it may be coming
- Breast development started about two years ago
- Pubic and underarm hair
- A growth spurt that's slowing down
- White or clear discharge in underwear, often 6 to 12 months before
- Mood changes and spots, as hormones start to rise
What's normal after menarche
| In the first years | |
|---|---|
| Cycle length | Often 21 to 45 days |
| Bleeding | Usually 2 to 7 days |
| Regularity | Can skip months; settles over 2 to 3 years |
Early cycles are often anovulatory, meaning no egg is released, which is why timing is unpredictable. Read the full guide: your first period, plus periods and puberty.
Why it matters
Doctors call the menstrual cycle a vital sign for young people: it reflects overall health. It's also an emotional time. New hormones bring new feelings, and some people notice moodiness before a period from early on. A simple tracker and a first period kit can make it feel less surprising.
See a doctor if there's no period by 15, or no breast development by 13, if periods last more than 7 days, soak a pad every hour or two, come closer than 21 days or further than 45 days apart, or cause pain that stops daily life.
Frequently asked questions
What age is too early for a first period?
Periods before about age 8, or breast development before 8, are considered early and worth checking with a doctor.
Is my first period supposed to be light?
Often, yes. First periods can be very light, brown or spotty, and flow usually becomes more regular over time.
