Brown discharge: definition and meaning

Brown discharge is vaginal discharge colored by old blood that has had time to oxidize, the way a cut apple turns brown. It's most common just before or after a period, when flow is slow. It can also appear around ovulation, with new birth control or in early pregnancy. On its own it's usually harmless.
When it shows up
- Before your period: a little old blood as the lining starts to loosen
- After your period: the last of the flow leaving slowly
- Mid-cycle: light ovulation spotting
- On hormonal birth control: breakthrough bleeding
- Early pregnancy: possible implantation bleeding
- Perimenopause: as cycles get less predictable
Why it matters
Color tells you mostly about speed: red is fresh and flowing, brown is older and slower. It doesn't tell you much about health on its own. What matters more is the pattern and any company it keeps: smell, itching, pain or fever point to something like an infection. Healthy vaginal discharge changes across the cycle, so tracking helps you learn what's normal for you.
Unexpected spotting can stir up worry, especially if you're hoping or not hoping to be pregnant. Noting the day it happened gives you something concrete to look back on. Full guide: brown discharge.
See a doctor if brown discharge comes with a strong smell, itching, pelvic pain or fever, keeps happening between periods, follows sex, appears after menopause, or comes with pain in early pregnancy.
Frequently asked questions
Is brown discharge a sign of pregnancy?
Sometimes. Light brown spotting around when your period is due can be implantation bleeding, but it's more often the start or end of a period. A pregnancy test answers it.
Why is my period blood brown?
Slow flow gives blood more time to oxidize. Brown blood at the start or end of a period is very common.
