Ovulation calculator boy or girl: what timing can (and can't) do

Estimated ovulation: Friday, October 30
| 💗 “Girl” timing (Shettles) | Mon, Oct 26 – Wed, Oct 28 |
| 💙 “Boy” timing (Shettles) | Thu, Oct 29 – Fri, Oct 30 |
Honest note: the largest study of timing and baby sex (Wilcox, NEJM 1995) found no link. These dates show what the Shettles method suggests; your real odds stay about 50/50 either way.
🔒 Calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored. Estimates only: bodies vary.
An ovulation calculator boy or girl tool estimates your ovulation day, then shows the Shettles method's timing: sex 2 to 4 days before ovulation for a girl, and on or the day before ovulation for a boy. It's a popular belief, but the largest study of timing (Wilcox, NEJM 1995) found no effect on sex. Your odds stay about 50/50.
How the ovulation calculator boy or girl tool works
Wanting a little girl or a little boy is a lovely, very human thing to hope for. This calculator shows what the best-known timing method suggests for your cycle, and then tells you plainly what the evidence says, so you can enjoy the idea without pinning too much on it.
- Enter the first day of your last period and your usual cycle length.
- It estimates ovulation as your next period date minus 14 days.
- It then shows the Shettles "girl" timing (4 to 2 days before ovulation) and "boy" timing (the day before ovulation and ovulation day).
Example: with a 28-day cycle that started on May 1, estimated ovulation is May 15. Shettles "girl" timing is May 11 to 13, and "boy" timing is May 14 to 15. Those are the same days the general fertile window calculator highlights, just split in two.
The Shettles method, explained
In the 1960s and 70s, Dr. Landrum Shettles proposed that sperm carrying a Y chromosome (boy) swim faster but live shorter, while X-carrying sperm (girl) are slower but hardier. If that were true, sex close to ovulation would favor boys and sex a few days earlier would favor girls. The method also suggests positions, diet and vaginal pH tweaks.
Later lab work has not found reliable speed or survival differences between X and Y sperm, and the original theory was never confirmed in careful studies.
What the research says about timing and baby sex
The clearest test comes from Wilcox and colleagues (NEJM, 1995). They followed 221 women trying to conceive, measured the day of ovulation from daily urine hormones, and recorded every time the couple had sex. Pregnancies that became boys and pregnancies that became girls had the same pattern of timing relative to ovulation. Timing changed the chance of getting pregnant, not the sex of the baby.
| Method | What it claims | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|---|
| Shettles timing | Early sex for a girl, sex at ovulation for a boy | No effect on sex in the Wilcox study |
| Chinese gender chart (Chinese ovulation calculator) | Mother's lunar age plus month of conception predicts sex | About 50% correct across 2.8 million Swedish births, the same as a coin toss |
| Diet (e.g. more salt for a boy, more dairy for a girl) | Changes the body's environment to favor one sex | No good evidence |
| Sex positions or orgasm timing | Helps one type of sperm | No good evidence |
| IVF with genetic testing (PGT) | Identifies embryo sex before transfer | Reliable, but regulated, and not allowed for non-medical reasons in many countries |

Whatever days you choose, your chance of a girl or a boy stays about 50/50 (slightly more boys are born worldwide, about 105 for every 100 girls). If the method is fun and it brings you closer as a couple, enjoy it. Just don't let it add pressure to trying.
Ovulation calculator for twins?
No timing can make twins more likely. Fraternal twins happen when two eggs are released in the same cycle, which is more common with age (especially in your late 30s), a family history of fraternal twins on the mother's side, more previous pregnancies, and fertility treatments. Identical twins happen by chance.
What timing does change: your chance of pregnancy
Timing really matters for getting pregnant at all. In the Wilcox study, conception only happened from sex in the six days ending on ovulation day, with the best odds in the two days before ovulation and on the day itself. If you're trying for a baby, sex every 2 to 3 days across your fertile window is the advice from the NHS and NICE, and it removes the need to time anything precisely.
Trying to conceive can bring its own ups and downs, including hope before ovulation and nerves in the two-week wait. Being gentle with yourselves matters more than any chart.
See a doctor if you've been trying for 12 months without a pregnancy (6 months if you're 35 or older), if your cycles are irregular or longer than 35 days, or if a family genetic condition linked to sex is the reason you're asking. A genetic counselor can explain your real options.
Frequently asked questions
Can you choose a boy or girl by timing ovulation?
The evidence says no. The Wilcox study (NEJM 1995) found the same timing pattern for pregnancies that became boys and girls, so the odds stay about 50/50.
How many days before ovulation should you try for a girl?
The Shettles method says 2 to 4 days before ovulation. It's a popular belief, but research hasn't found that it changes your baby's sex.
Is the Chinese gender chart accurate?
No. A study of 2.8 million Swedish births found it predicted sex correctly about half the time, the same as flipping a coin.
Can an ovulation calculator help you have twins?
No. Twins depend on things like age, family history and fertility treatment, not on which day you have sex.
