Why do I feel depressed before my period?

You may feel depressed before your period because estrogen and progesterone fall in the late luteal phase, and in people sensitive to that change it lowers serotonin and mood. For many, it's a few low days of PMS. If it's severe, includes hopelessness and lifts after your period, it may be PMDD. If you're low all month and worse before your period, it may be depression.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out now: call your local emergency number, or in the US call or text 988. In the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123. You don't have to wait for your period to pass.
Why your mood drops before your period
In the days before your period, both estrogen and progesterone fall. Estrogen supports serotonin, and progesterone's breakdown products act on the brain's calming GABA system. Most people's brains ride out these shifts. In people who are more sensitive to normal hormone changes, the same shifts can bring heaviness, hopelessness, tearfulness and loss of interest. It's biological, it's common, and it's not a character flaw.

What helps
- Track two cycles. A one-tap daily mood check-in shows whether the low days cluster before your period. That record is exactly what a doctor needs.
- Keep moving. Regular aerobic exercise is one of the better-studied ways to ease PMS mood symptoms.
- Guard your sleep in the second half of your cycle.
- Lower the load. Plan easier days when you expect the dip.
- Reach out. Tell someone you trust that this week can be hard.
- Ask about treatment. SSRIs can work within days for premenstrual mood, and some can be taken just in the second half of the cycle.

Lulu learns how you usually feel in each phase and gives you a gentle heads-up before your harder days, so they feel less like they come from nowhere.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if low mood before your period affects work, relationships or how you see yourself, if it lasts more than two weeks, or if you're low most of the month. Our PMDD self-check can help you describe it.
