Why do I get anxiety before my period?

Anxiety before your period happens because progesterone and estrogen fall in the late luteal phase. Progesterone's breakdown product normally calms the brain through GABA, and estrogen supports serotonin, so when both drop, sensitive brains can tip toward worry, tension, racing thoughts or even panic. Poor sleep and stress add to it. It usually eases within a few days of bleeding.
What premenstrual anxiety can feel like
- A knot in your stomach or a tight chest for no clear reason
- Overthinking messages, replaying conversations
- Feeling sure something is wrong in a relationship or at work
- Restlessness, trouble falling asleep, waking at night
- A racing heart, shaky feelings, or panic attacks
- Relief, sometimes sudden, a day or two into your period
Why it happens
After ovulation, progesterone rises and is turned into a neurosteroid called allopregnanolone, which acts on GABA receptors, the brain's brakes. When progesterone falls before your period, so does that calming support. In some people the brain seems to react poorly to the rise and fall itself. At the same time, falling estrogen can lower serotonin. Together, they make the nervous system jumpier.
If you already live with anxiety, it's common for it to get worse in the days before your period. Read more in our guide to anxiety before your period.
What helps
| Try | Why |
|---|---|
| Expect it | Knowing "this is day 25" makes worry feel less like a warning sign |
| Slow breathing (longer out-breath) | Calms the stress response in minutes |
| Cut back caffeine that week | Caffeine can mimic and fuel anxiety |
| Regular movement | Aerobic exercise eases PMS and anxiety symptoms |
| Protect sleep | Tired brains worry more |
| Delay big decisions | Revisit them after your period if you can |
| Talk therapy (CBT) | Has evidence for both PMS and anxiety |

Noting a worry with the date, then reading it a week later, often shows how much the luteal phase was talking. Lulu's daily check-in makes that pattern visible.
When it might be more than PMS
If anxiety or panic before your period is severe and every cycle, it may be PMDD. If you're anxious all month and just worse before your period, it may be an anxiety disorder that worsens premenstrually. Both deserve care. See also PMS panic attacks.
See a doctor if anxiety before your period stops you working, sleeping or seeing people, if you have panic attacks, or if you feel anxious most of the month. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call your local emergency number now, or in the US call or text 988. In the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123.
