Why do I feel so horny before my period?

Feeling horny before your period is common and normal. As progesterone falls in the last days of your cycle, its dampening effect on desire lifts, while testosterone stays steady. Pelvic congestion (extra blood flow to the area) can make you feel more sensitive too. Many people peak around ovulation, but plenty notice a second spike right before or during their period.
What's going on with your hormones
Desire across the cycle tracks two main hormones. Studies that measured hormones daily found estrogen tends to raise desire, while progesterone tends to lower it. Progesterone is highest in the middle of the luteal phase, then drops sharply in the days before your period. For some people, that drop feels like the brakes coming off.
Other reasons you might feel it more
- Pelvic congestion: more blood flows to the pelvis before your period, which can heighten sensitivity and arousal.
- Breast changes: fuller, more sensitive breasts can feel more erotic for some (or just sore for others).
- Emotional need: if PMS leaves you feeling low or tense, wanting closeness and release is very human.
- Psychological freedom: some people relax more knowing pregnancy is less likely right before their period. That isn't a safe assumption, though (see below).

Pregnancy right before your period is less likely, but cycles shift and ovulation can come late. Lulu shows estimated fertile days to help you understand your body, not as contraception. See can you get pregnant right before your period.
Is it normal if I don't feel this?
Totally. Libido varies hugely between people and from month to month. Stress, sleep, relationship stuff, medications like SSRIs, and hormonal contraception (which flattens the natural hormone curve) all change the picture. Some people feel less desire before their period, especially if PMS brings tiredness, bloating or low mood. Read more about how your sex drive changes through your cycle.
Making the most of it
- Masturbation and orgasm may also ease period cramps for some people.
- If you're partnered, a heads-up can help. Some couples like knowing which phase is coming.
- Sex on your period is fine if you both want it; see is period sex safe.
Talk to a doctor if a sudden change in libido comes with other changes, such as very low mood, a new medication, pain during sex, or irregular periods. Low desire that bothers you is also a valid thing to bring up: it's common and often treatable.
Frequently asked questions
Is being horny before your period a sign of pregnancy?
Not really. Some people notice higher libido in early pregnancy, but it's also a common premenstrual pattern. Only a test can tell.
Why am I more horny on my period than at ovulation?
Everyone's pattern is different. Lower progesterone, pelvic congestion and feeling more relaxed can make your period your peak.
Can birth control change when I feel horny?
Yes. Hormonal methods that stop ovulation flatten natural hormone swings, so the monthly peaks often fade.
