Why do I feel dizzy on my period?

Feeling dizzy on your period usually comes from one of a few things: blood loss and low iron (especially with heavy periods), prostaglandins that can lower blood pressure, a fainting reflex triggered by strong cramps, dehydration or skipped meals, or menstrual migraine. Occasional lightheadedness on heavy days is common. Fainting, dizziness with heavy bleeding, or feeling exhausted and breathless all month needs a doctor.
Six common reasons
| Cause | What it feels like | Clue |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy bleeding and low iron (anemia) | Lightheaded, tired, pale, breathless on stairs | Heavy periods; worse over months |
| Prostaglandins | Woozy, flushed, sometimes with nausea or diarrhea | First day or two, with cramps |
| Pain-triggered fainting (vasovagal) | Sudden sweaty, tunnel vision, need to lie down | Peak cramps, often standing |
| Dehydration or low blood sugar | Shaky, foggy, headachy | Skipped meals, hot day, exercise |
| Menstrual migraine | Spinning or unsteady, with or before headache | Same days each cycle |
| Standing up too fast | Brief head rush | After a hot bath or lying curled up |
Heavy periods and iron
Each period you lose iron with blood. If periods are heavy, your body may not keep up, leading to iron-deficiency anemia. That causes tiredness, shortness of breath, a racing heart, pale skin and dizziness, often all month, worse on period days. It also drags on mood and concentration. A simple blood test checks it, and iron supplements and treating heavy bleeding fix it. See what is a heavy period.
When cramps make you faint
Strong pain can trigger the vagus nerve, which slows the heart and drops blood pressure for a moment. You might go pale, sweaty and feel like you'll pass out, especially on the toilet or standing. It's frightening but usually brief. Taking anti-inflammatory painkillers early, before cramps peak, often prevents it. See how to stop period cramps fast.
What helps right now
- Sit or lie down with your legs raised until it passes.
- Drink water and eat something with carbs and protein.
- Stand up slowly, especially after a bath or a nap.
- Treat cramps early with heat and, if safe for you, ibuprofen or naproxen.
- Eat iron-rich foods (red meat, beans, lentils, leafy greens, fortified cereals) with vitamin C. See what to eat on your period.
If you feel dizzy in the days before bleeding, hormones, blood sugar and anxiety are more likely causes. See can PMS cause dizziness.
Call emergency services if you faint and don't come round quickly, or have chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or severe one-sided belly pain (especially if you could be pregnant). See a doctor if you're dizzy most periods, soak a pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours, pass large clots, or feel tired and breathless all month: these suggest heavy bleeding or anemia.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to feel dizzy on the first day of your period?
Mild lightheadedness on day 1 is common, often from cramps and prostaglandins. Fainting isn't something to ignore.
Can a period make your blood pressure drop?
Prostaglandins and pain can lower blood pressure briefly, which is one reason for feeling woozy.
Should I take iron on my period?
Only if a blood test shows you're low or a doctor suggests it. Too much iron can cause problems too.
