Apple Health Cycle Tracking vs Lulu: is the free app enough?

3 min read 路 Updated October 26, 2026

The short answer

Apple's Cycle Tracking is free, private and built into the Health app and Apple Watch. It predicts periods and fertile windows, estimates ovulation after the fact from wrist temperature and flags cycle deviations. It doesn't forecast mood, give phase guidance or offer a partner view. Lulu adds those, works with Apple Health and imports wrist temperature.

What Apple's Cycle Tracking does well

Let's be clear: for many people, Apple's built-in tracker is enough. It's free, already on your iPhone, and it's good.

  • Free and built in. Log periods, symptoms, spotting and basal body temperature in Health on iPhone or in the Cycle Tracking app on Apple Watch.
  • Predictions and alerts. Upcoming period and fertile window notifications. The fertile window is a six-day estimate based on the calendar method.
  • Wrist temperature. On Apple Watch Series 8 or later and Ultra models, Apple uses overnight wrist temperature to give retrospective ovulation estimates, usually after about two cycles of wearing the watch to sleep.
  • Cycle deviation alerts. It checks the last six months for irregular or infrequent periods, prolonged periods or persistent spotting.
  • Doctor-friendly PDF. Export the last 12 months of cycle history as a PDF.
  • Strong privacy. Apple says Health data synced to iCloud is encrypted in a way Apple can't read when you use two-factor authentication.

What it doesn't do

  • No mood forecast. You can log a mood change as a symptom, and Health has a separate State of Mind log, but nothing connects your feelings to your cycle phase or warns you before harder days.
  • No phase guidance. It doesn't explain what your phase usually means for energy, mood or sleep.
  • No partner view. Health Sharing can share categories with a contact, but there's no partner-friendly view with tips.
  • Not much personality. It's clean and clinical, which some people love and some find cold.

Who each suits

Stick with Apple if you mainly want period dates, fertile window estimates and wrist-temperature ovulation estimates, for free. It's a solid tracker with excellent privacy.

Add Lulu if you want to understand your ups and downs: which days you usually feel tired, tender or brilliant, a heads-up before PMS days, a PMS chart for your doctor, or a way for your partner to know when to bring tea. See how it works with our mood by phase forecast.

A word on wrist temperature

Apple calls its ovulation estimates retrospective: the temperature shift appears after ovulation, so it can't tell you in advance. Apple also says Cycle Tracking should not be used as birth control or to diagnose a health condition. The same is true for Lulu. Frequently asked questions

Is Apple's Cycle Tracking accurate?

Its period predictions are as good as your logged history, and wrist temperature can refine them. Ovulation estimates are retrospective, not predictions.

Does Apple Health track mood with your cycle?

Health has a separate State of Mind log, and Cycle Tracking lets you log mood changes as a symptom, but it doesn't show mood patterns by cycle phase.

Do I need an Apple Watch for Lulu?

No. Lulu works on iPhone alone. If you have an Apple Watch with wrist temperature, Lulu can import it.

Is Apple Cycle Tracking private?

Apple says Health data synced to iCloud is encrypted so Apple can't read it when two-factor authentication is on.
